ESL & Citizenship Classes

We offer outreach classes taught by instructors who are members of the Alberta Teachers of English as a Second Language (ATESL). All courses are run on a not-for-profit and cost-recovery basis. There is a nomimal registration fee of $40 per course.

Location of Courses

All courses are offered at the following outreach centres:

McKee Elementary School

Nazarene Church

Program Dates

Courses are offered three times a year:

  • Winter (January to March)
  • Spring (April to June)
  • Fall (September to November)

Days

Courses are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Times

Classes are offered on a part time basis, morning or afternoon, providing the learners some flexibility. Morning classes are 9:15 AM to 11:15 AM. Afternoon classes are 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.


Adult Basic Literacy

Offers basic literacy to adults who want to upgrade their reading, numerical and writing skills to the equivalent of grade nine level of competence. Learners will practice listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Emphasis is on listening, understanding and verbal skills.

English as a Second Language

Offers basic proficiency in English as a Second Language for adults. It includes reading, writing, speaking, listening and grammar.

Health and Wellness

This course incorporates elements of preventative health along with ESL programming. It provides the participants a practical approach to remain healthy and fit as they learn the language. The focus is on health, fitness, nutrition and preventative measures.

Community and Support

The course deals with various community issues such as family violence and drug abuse along with ESL.

Outreach Basic Survival English Program

The course will focus on four main areas:

  1. conversation exercise designed to enable the learner to practice speaking English on day-to-day situations and issues
  2. listening exercises to enable the learner to listen attentively during conversations or ineractions with others
  3. writing exercises to help them fill out forms and write letters
  4. reading exercises to enable them to read labels, recipes and other instructions, report cards, newspapers and other basic materials
It is intended for homebound, isolated, non-English speaking immigrant adults in need of basic English lessons to communicate in everyday situations.

Citizenship for New Canadians

The course orients adults new to Canada to Canadian life. The course focuses on social, economic and political forces in Canada and helps the learner to acquire knowledge of Canada's fundamental and democratic rights and freedoms, as well as their responsibilities as Canadian citizens.
